Basic understanding of the English language

Regardless of where you live, learning the English language is a highly useful skill. English is the first language for most of the people in the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. It is used as a secondary language in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. English is one of six official languages used by the United Nations and a common language in many global business organizations. In all, at least one billion people have a basic understanding of the English language.
Although English is technically no more complicated than any other language, it does have a few features that present problems for many learners. For example, English allows for up to three consonants before a vowel and four after it as part of its syllable structure. This is a fairly unique characteristic that causes difficulty for speakers of languages in which all words end in vowels.
